I had the pleasure of photographing this beautiful family one chilly day. It was just a mini session, but that’s all we needed to capture the joy that this family brings to one another. And I couldn’t have chosen better outfits for their session. This family’s clothing choices were on POINT and perfect. I wish I would’ve had more time to shoot with the Day’s, as I had such a wonderful time photographing them and capturing even just a few moments of joy to share with everyone else.
Me’ja & Sedrick, you have a wonderful family and beautiful little girls! Here are just a few of my favorites from this mini session 🙂
Every year, I strive to do one kind of styled shoot. It helps me get more creative and I can do whatever I want with the people I’m working with. I’ve done them for what is now the second year, but STILL….it’s a THING now, lol. Every single year, I work with this marvelous couple. Chris & Jessica are just awesome people and an even more amazing couple. They are so creative and let me do my thing. It’s just AWESOME.
This year, me and Jessica were in the talks of doing an apple orchard styled shoot (which I STILL want to do!), BUT! The apple orchard wasn’t even open when we shot this session, so that kind of shot that idea out of the water, lol. Jess brought it up about a bohemian-chic kind of shoot. And it was PERFECT! They were perfect for it. We had a little issue finding a field to shoot in, but it all worked out. We got to shoot this RIGHT at their wedding anniversary as well, which is what we done last year. Makes these little sessions, just that much more special 🙂
I got to explore the area where we were and gave a couple of different styles to this themed shoot. With the bright sun, some deep green pine and some warm sunlight, to the sun setting at just the right time, it was all perfect. Except the heat, no….that heat was terrible. I could’ve done without that, haha. Anyway, here is my take on a Bohemian-Chic Styled Shoot.
There’s this thing that Chris & Jessica have done with me for the past two shoots where they want to take a photo together of the photo from the previous anniversary. Last summer was their 1st wedding anniversary, so they took a photo from their wedding. This year includes last years styled shoot and the wedding photo! Photoception, my friends!
Goodness gracious, what did I tell you about that warm sunset light?! Easily one of my many favorites from this session. EASY.
Again, I loved this session with Chris & Jessica. They are always amazing, and I really hope they decide to do it again next year!
As you may have noticed, I haven’t been blogging that much this past month. Dec-mid March are slow months for me, but it’s been exceptionally slow here lately. But I have been feeling kinda down and discouraged because I haven’t had anything to really do. And when I get that way, I tend to start watching videos on YouTube of my favorite channels; People to make the laugh (Olan Rogers), people to encourage me (Once again, Olan Rogers [ha] and Jasmine Star), and just people that share the same interests as I do, and then vlog about it, haha (Anything beauty related, haha). I tend to run these thoughts in my mind about styled shoots (and don’t worry, I will be needing people for one soon enough, haha) and then when I get to the part when I ask for models, my mind draws a blank and that feeling of being uninspired comes back. …Until I find the perfect couple. They look the way that I had envisioned, find my jokes funny, and are the coolest cats on the planet. This is the way I hope it happens, haha.
When I get to the point when I feel like I can’t go on anymore, I look back and realize that it’s been FOUR years of this. Why quit now? In my mind, I’m thinking, “It would be easier to quit”. Of course it would be easier. I wouldn’t have to worry about advertising, planning, organizing sessions, editing, TAXES, but all of that makes up for the fact that I’m doing what I love to do.
I get to go out there with my gear and photograph some amazing people in the best way that I know how. Have a great time and possibly enjoy those tiny rays of sunlight that peek through tree branches and land perfectly where I need them to. Ya know…the little things.
And then there’s Hailey.
For those of you who don’t know, Hailey is my four year old daughter. She is the most sassy, wild, curly headed little turd that you’ll ever meet.
She is my reason for life in general. I never knew what that meant until she came along and until here recently, didn’t realize how big she is getting on me. We registered her for k4 (which is pretty much preschool for 4 year olds in SC) last Friday. This child was so excited because she thought she was just gonna waltz right in that building and go to class. She put the biggest book she owns in her backpack and threw that bad boy on her back. She amazes me every single day and I know the good Lord will give me slack if I stop doing what I love to do (besides being her mommy) right now. I was actually reading through Hailey’s baby book yesterday and I read something that really sat with me. There was a section that was “About mommy & about daddy”. In the interests, I had wrote (this was either before she was born, or right after) that I, “Loved singing and music, I love to paint and taking pictures. Hopefully mommy will be a famous photographer one day!”.
I don’t know if that’s suppose to encourage me or make me feel terrible because I haven’t gotten there yet. But once again….I’ve only been at this for FOUR YEARS. But if you really think about it, four years, is quite a long time to really stick with something. Practicing at it, getting better at times, making mistakes, and learning lessons from those mistakes…it’s all a part of life. But I need to prove to myself that I can get to that point to where I feel accomplished or “famous” as I wrote in Hailey’s baby book. There have been things in the past couple of years that have pushed me back, but I have a feeling that things will pick up very soon.
It started with an idea. Something that would really put me out there and make me stand out among any other photographer, at least that’s what I thought it would do. I’ve been wanting to do a styled shoot for a very long time, but never really had the means to do so. I hadn’t known any other vendors, nobody to really point me in the right direction, and not even models to make the shoot happen. And then I met the Classy Styles crew.
I had been advertising casting calls for models for my vintage picnic shoot. It was just everything that I wanted to do. EXACTLY my style. But surprisingly, nobody jumped on the opportunity. I wasn’t even going to charge these people, I just wanted them to look awesome and rock my camera like a dang wagon wheel. And then I got a message from a past client of mine. They were actually my very first clients in South Carolina when I moved down here and I was ECSTATIC. I remember this couple being so photogenic and wonderful to work with. Their names are Chris & Jessica and they are AMAZING in front of my camera….or any camera for that matter.
So, we set a date and this date was working FABULOUSLY because the Sunday after we had scheduled for the shoot was Chris & Jessica’s one year anniversary. So this shoot was also very special to them as well. It took us forever to find a location (actually, we didn’t decide on anything until a day or two before the shoot! lol). It was just hard to find something so intimate and something that would fit the style of this shoot. I then asked my dear friend April (of Classy Styles) if she and her crew would help me out on hair and makeup. They agreed and by God….DID THEY DELIVER!!!
This shoot was honestly, the best shoot, I’ve ever done, in my eyes. I loved every single shot that I took and I couldn’t have asked for a better day, weather, people, or anything for that matter. Everything was perfect. Chris & Jessica were perfect. Did I mention how perfect everything was? Yeah……I’m just so excited to share everything with you.
This styled shoot, as you can see, was absolutely amazing. The sun came out when it was suppose to and wasn’t as harsh as I anticipated. It was all just perfect. Classy Styles made Jessica look like a freakin rockstar and took the look of things to a whole new level. Can you believe all of the props that were used for this came from Jessica?? She brought EVERYTHING!! I was just in awe of how amazing and how creative they are. I am definitely looking forward to working with this adoring couple again in the future…most definitely!
Now….this bring me to another point. I noticed that I work best with styled shoots and engagements here lately. And I want to do more! I had one….now I wanna do it all of the time! lol. So…..whoever comes up with the next best idea for a styled shoot and I like it (and as long as it will go great with my style of shooting), I will do it AND you can have the session for 50% off! WHOOPWHOOP! I’m all about anything vintage, cute, trendy, with bright colors, neutrals, with all natural lighting. I can’t wait to hear what ideas you guys might have! 🙂
It started with an idea. One that I had wanted to do for quite some time, but I could never get anyone to take a leap and….just do it.
Until I was introduced to someone named April. She is a hairstylist/MUA (hair is her forte) in my area and by God, she does her job well. She introduced herself to me on Facebook after finding out that I had done this engagement of one of her clients. Time went by and I finally decided to ask her about setting up a styled shoot. Now…a bridal wasn’t in mind, (although I had been DYING to do one!) and she brought up that she was more interested in doing one. And buddy, so was I. She already had two models in mind, a location, EVERYTHING. I was so happy to find out not even an hour later that we had one model who was willing to do it PLUS her wedding was only a week after we had planned on the shoot. PERFECT. And then the day came. I went to April’s home, where she does all of her work and I was so in awe with how well she takes care of her clients. As you can see below, the hair style she chose was so perfect and the makeup (done by Charleen – whom works with April) was beautiful for our day. I didn’t get there early enough to catch Charleen in action, but I did for April. The photos below show her doing her stuff 🙂
As we finally got up to Glassy Mountain (where we had planned on shooting) we were in a bit of a pickle because there was a wedding going on at a certain period of time before we showed up…so we waited it out. And then we made our way to the chapel (and believe me…this chapel is SO gorgeous and the view is AHHH-MAZING) and found out that there was ANOTHER wedding happening immediately afterwards. Sooo, we had to improvise. And we….rocked. it. We went to a closed off golf course and got some amazing shots while the sun was trying to set. April (which is also our model’s name) was gorgeous and a natural in front of the camera. LOVED working with all of these wonderful ladies!
This was LITERALLY her wedding dress. *sigh* I could have died from happiness when I saw this dress in person.
What a beauty…and seriously…what a privilege it was for her to volunteer herself for April and I for this amazing shoot. Everything was hers. The dress, the rings, shoes, everything. EXCEPT for the bouquet, April (hair) made that bad boy herself! I’m so thankful that both Aprils (lol) helped me out in this great way for my first bridal shoot. I can’t wait for the next one, especially since this one has opened my eyes in so many different ways 🙂
Check out April’s awesome business on Facebook and their website. All links are listed down below 🙂
Until next time y’all…or until after I’m back from vacation. I have two weddings this weekend which I am ALSO working with April on! SWEET!! But after this weekend, the beach is calling my family’s name.
